Valparaiso, Chile

Today we wanted to be a little productive before our afternoon walking tour.  Breakfast at our hotel was at the gluten free café next door.  The food was absolutely delicious!  We had toast with jam, fresh fruit salad, juice, turkey, cheese and a banana oatmeal cake thing.  After breakfast, we did some laundry so that it could start to dry, and did a quick yoga workout.  I sure miss actual hot yoga classes, my Reflex gym fam, and spin classes back in Baltimore.  We had done a ton of laundry so our clothes were hanging in every possible place around the room.  Poor cleaning lady.

On our way to the walking tour we stumbled up a empanada place that had a line, and 80 different types of empanadas!. They were amazing! We each got one and then got one to split and that was more than enough food.  Perfect afternoon lunch before the walking tour.

We did the 3 PM walking tour of Valparaiso.  Our guide was very animated, and grew up in the city, so he really knew what he was talking about.  The walking tour included a trip on the ascendor which is a cable car/funicular that goes up the hill so you don’t have to walk up it and a ride on the historic bus. We really loved the street art that was all over the city.  The city supports these artists to paint murals because it is considered art, not just random graffiti. The entire city was full of vibrant colors and had a cool vibe. One of the cooler parts of the tour was when we knocked on a pretty basic looking door, said a special hello to convince the older gentleman behind the door to come out and give us alfajores (yummy cookies!). The alfajores were sooooo delicious. Another fun part of the tour was an area of town that had a slide instead of a steep stairway, so that was fun.  Jenny forgot to keep her arms out and got a little rug burn on her elbow.

Once we finished up the tour, we went to a secret location where we toasted with some chicha. Chicha is a white wine that was picked early so it has a funky taste. Chicha is super cheap ($1.5 for 1 liter) and it was not good. After the walking tour, which was a full 3 hours, we went back to our hostel, relaxed from all the walking.
