El Calafate, Argentina
We had no issues with the bus or border crossing, and arrive in El Calafate around 2 PM. We had made some rice and lentils before we went on the trek and froze them in the hostel, so we would have something to eat when we returned. Because we got in so late, we didn't reheat them, which was perfect because that gave us lunch for today.
We walked back to the bus station to try and figure out our buses to El Chalten and to Bariloche, where we are meeting Tim and have the timeshare. Unfortunately none of these routes/times were posted online so we had no idea that the only buses to Bariloche were 26 or 30 hours in semi-cama seating (doesn't fully recline) and they only leave on odd days. Because of the bus schedules we wouldn't be able to get to Bariloche in time unless we left a day earlier, which would mean we would have to hike Fitz Roy and then get on a 30 hour bus....definitely wasn't happening. We decided to return to the hostel to try and research other options. We eventually decided to take the 90 minute flight instead of the bus. It was quite expensive, but it saved so much time and comfort. We had a few hiccups (apparently prices listed in pesos online are only for Argentineans...foreigners have to pay higher fares for the same flight) trying to book the flight, but somehow Jenny was able to get it to work.
After planning we ate some dinner, wandered to an ATM to get cash for the park entrance, and went to bed. The room was cramped and there was not enough space for bags so everyone was tripping over things. In the morning, I noticed a few bites on my arm which we were afraid were bedbugs so we had to search the sheets and my clothes. I found 1 bed bug shell in my bed so we think it was just a rogue bed bug, but I kept those clothes separate just in case.
