El Chalten, Argentina
The hike up to Fitz Roy was supposed to be long but moderately easy. The signs at the base said it was 10km up to the top. The trail itself started off uphill but began to flatten out in the middle. About the 4km point, we arrived to our first viewpoint of Fitz Roy. The views were stunning and we lucked out with weather again today. As we continued our trek up the trail, the views changed as we passed through the valleys alongside the mountains. Everything was pretty easy until we got until kilometer mark 9. As soon as we got there, the sign said it would take one hour, and only the healthy and the fit should go up. Still a little sore and hurt from the W trek, we went for it anyways. The sign wasn't lying. It was hard. It was straight uphill over rocks all the way until the top. The uphill was worth it because the views were incredible. The views were comparable to those of Las Torres in Chile, but the hike up was a lot easier even with the last kilometer. The downhill was just as hard as the way up and we were excited to reach the bottom.
Once we got back into town, it was about 5pm and we decided we should celebrate by grabbing some beers at the craft beer bar. They had a 2 for 1 happy hour deal but you weren't allowed to share the deal. You HAD to get 2 beers for yourself in order to get the deal...twist my arm. The bar had three types of beer: blonde, red, and black. We started with the blonde and red which were pretty good and each of us finished up with the dark beer which was our favorite by far. While Jenny and I were sitting at the bar, we actually ran into a fellow UVA and VT grad! Always great to meet another Hokie.
We finished up happy hour and headed back to our hotel to start laundry and find a place for dinner. Luckily, the hotel had laundry service so we gave them a giant bag of all our clothes. The front desk lady laughed and the amount of clothes that we had to wash. It was about 6 bucks a load but we needed to get it done since pretty much all our clothes were dirty from the treks. After we dropped our clothes off we went out to dinner at the same place I went to the night before. We found out that it was actually the #5 top place to eat in El Chalten! Jenny got the spinach ravioli which pesto, which was more olive oil and walnuts than pesto, and I got an Argentinian stew. Both were delicious and we strolled back hotel before the Arizona game came on. Jenny stayed up and watched the game cast while I went to bed. Sad day for Jenny and her wildcats as they lost to Xavier in the sweet sixteen. :(
