San Martin de los Andes, Argentina

Since we had a week in San Martin, we spent a while trying to figure out what to do.  The resort works with a travel agency to book excursions and trips but they all seemed a bit pricey for us. We used the excursion list that they gave us as a starting point to figure out what we could do that was close. Tim did the research but we found a day hike that wasn't far and was also free. Score!

After talking to a few rental companies in town, we ended up booking online through Hertz because it was cheaper than booking in person.  We were a little nervous it wouldn't actually work, but it seemed to go through the system.

Since we had a car now, we needed to head straight to the trail head so we could get back before dark.   The trail head was only 30 minutes away but the roads to get there were not paved. In our little rental we were bouncing and bumping all over the place. The blogs that Tim read were spot on and we were able to find a small parking lot at the base of the trail.

The hike was up the Cerro Colorado and was supposed to take 5 hours roundtrip. The map said it was an intermediate trail and they weren't lying. The  beginning part of the trail was pretty easy and we got to see some wild cows which was cool. As we continued up the trail, it began to get a bit steeper and seemed like we were climbing in elevation quickly. We thought we were making good time but right as we were walking up a steep part, an older guy comes running past us.  crazy!  After a few hours of hiking, we finally made it to the top!  The views of the area were beautiful but it was super exposed above the treeline, so we were freezing!  Super windy.  There was a pile of rocks that we used to block the wind but after about 10 minutes up there, we decided it was cold and time to head down. The way down was easier than going up and we made it down in just about 1.5 hours. We've been doing a lot of hiking recently and the downhills have been super tough on our knees, so we took it pretty slow.  Feeling accomplished, we hopped back in the car and heading back home so we could have some dinner.

We stayed this evening and made tacos for dinner. Jenny and I were craving tacos so we fixed them up with the works, guac and all. They didn't have a skillet in our place, so we had to get creative. Jenny found me a pizza pan and I was able to heat it up and cook on that. With such a large surface it was legit! After dinner we headed to Bingo night at the resort.  They played bingo a little differently, but we caught on quickly.  Unfortunately we didn't win any of the rounds.
