Punta Arenas to Santiago, Chile

We were super excited to get out of Backpackers Paradise and get on our flight to Punta Arenas. After breakfast we hailed a cab and I asked him how much it would cost to get to the airport. He initially said a number higher than we have heard but I was able to haggle him down! Success! My Spanish came through this time.

One of our friends from our Antarctica trip, Alberto, was also doing a similar route so we synced up with him at the airport. He was going rent a car and head to Vina del Mar, so we decided to hop in with him and go to Vina/Valparaiso for a few days since we had heard that Karen (Nick's family) wasn't going to be in town until the 9th.  Once we landed, we headed to re rental car counter, where we found out that Alberto had rented the smallest car possible, and a manual.  He said he had only driven a manual one other time, so we decided to add me as a driver too.  Luckily the guy at the desk ended up upgrading us to a bigger, automatic car...so that was easy.

We piled in the car and we were off to Vina.  Alberto is funny guy, so it made the ride a great time.  He insisted that we stop at a gas station to get gummies because "every road trip needs snacks", as if the 1 hour drive to Vina constituted as a road trip.  Either way, we were happy to stop, and Jenny even found one of her favorite snacks: Pinguinos!  The drive from Santiago to Vina was beautiful with all the vineries and mountains. Alberto dropped us off at our hostel which was in a prime location and he continued off to his place. Our hostel was someone’s house that he converted a few rooms into dorms. It was quiet, nice and location was perfect. It ended up being a great spot for us.

We ended up heading to the grocery store to pick up a few items and ended up waiting in the WORST grocery line.  It made shopping in the aisles impossible and was probably double the length of time we spent shopping.
