Santiago, Chile
Saturday we woke up early-ish and planned to meet Oscar and his family, and Karen and Cote. Cata couldn't join us because that evening she was throwing a party for her husband, Esteban, at the house and needed to get the house ready. Oscar picked us up and we headed to a park in the center of the city on one of the cerros. We met Karen and Cote there and we began our hike up the hill. There were tons of people biking, walking, and running, and lots of dogs! Jenny accidentally showed attention towards one, and it followed us for at least 30 minutes. The weather was perfect and the views at the top were beautiful. We did notice a bunch of smog because Santiago is in a valley. Once we got to the top, we enjoyed a Mote con Huesillo which is peach nectar, wheat and a dried peach. It looked weird, but was sweet and tasty. We finished up our drinks and got in line to take the gondola back down. The gondola gave us a cool view of the city.
We drove back into the city for lunch. The place we went to was called El Hoyo, and it was more of a dive restaurant, but the food was phenomenal. Jenny and I split a meatloaf like meal with fries, two fried eggs and a grilled onion. That set up is call "El Pobre." Oscar got a Teremoto which is a red wine drink with a scoop of pineapple ice cream with some pisco or another liquor. It was tasty but I don’t know how you would be able to drink more than one. We ubered back to the city center and walked around for a bit to see some of the sights. Everything was closed but we were still able to see many of the bigger landmarks in the city.
As soon as we got back from sightseeing , we crashed hard because there was a party that evening for Esteban’s birthday. Since everything starts late here, we were able to get in a solid 2 hour nap before people started to arrive. They had about 70 people at the peak and food and drinks everywhere. The steaks and the chorizos were so good, and there were homemade pisco sours which were also tasty. A lot of the family was there, so it was nice to see everyone. At about 2am Jenny and I went upstairs to bed, but the party was still raging. We found out that the party went until 5am and people still partied until 8am! We definitely cannot hang late night here in Chile.
