Santiago, Chile

Thursday started off calm and relaxing. It was just Jenny and I at Cata's that day, so we woke up, made some fresh orange juice, and some turkey, egg and cheese sandwiches. Since we had a real washing machine, we threw a load of laundry in, and just relaxed outside.

About mid-day we heard a knock on the door.  We weren't expecting anyone, but I answered the door anyway. I didn’t know who it was at first, but it was Cata's brother, Oscar, that had stopped by and invited us to lunch with his family.  On our own way to lunch we stopped at the butcher shop/convenience store that Oscar and his wife run. The store was very cool and had just about everything you could need.  At lunch we tried two different kinds of shellfish that you can only get in Chile; Jenny and I tried them both, and they were actually pretty good! It could had been all the cheese on top but still.  After appetizers, Jenny ordered the Pastel de Choclo which was a corn stew with chicken, eggs, steak and creamed corned, and I ordered the chicken soup which was another Chilean staple. Both portions were so big we could have easily split one.

After lunch, Oscar drove us up to the mountains where people ski and snowboard. The roads were super windy and we were moving pretty fast, so Jenny had a bit of a headache when we got to the top.  The top of the mountains were beautiful--I could only imagine how cool it would be to ski there in the winter. After the trip to the mountains which was about 1 hour away, we went to Richardo’s house for onces. Onces is like tea time (in lieu of dinner) with light sandwiches and tea. I talked to grandma E on the phone to let her know we made it safe and then just got to know Karen’s family. This day was a packed day already but after onces  Jenny, Karen, Cote (Karen’s sister), Oscar, Cecilla (Oscar’s wife), Lucho (Oscars brother), and I all went out to the Catedral for drinks. It was a cool bar with a rooftop and live band.  The band, Rey Choclo, was a super hipster band making a bunch of weird noises, but super talented.  We'll try and attach a short clip.  The band members were crazy good, and would switch instruments every song.  I can't imagine knowing how to play one instrument in a band, let alone, 5!   We ended up leaving at about 1am to head back to Cata’s. It was a packed day but so much fun.
