Ushuaia, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile
The sky was beautiful leaving Ushuaia this morning. Jenny and I woke up early and walked down to the bus station to catch our first bus of the day to Rio Grande. We thought it had a flat tire but everyone got on board and it seemed fine. One of our friends from Antarctica was also doing the same route so it was fun to have a friend on the trip. The first bus was super easy. Once we got to Rio Grande, we had about 20 minutes between buses so I ran next door to buy some empanadas and some sandwiches to eat before we crossed the border. This bus was the longer of the bus rides and a large portion of it was on dirt roads. They were building the road but it was not completed yet. We crossed the border without any issues. In order to get to Punta Arenas we had to take a ferry across the Straits of Magellan. Everyone had to get off the bus, walk onto the ferry, ride it for 20ish minutes and then hop back on the bus on the other side. The hotdogs smelled wonderful but we did not indulge. The whole ride we had clear skies but as soon as we stepped off the bus it started to drizzled. That drizzle turned into a downpour right as we got to our hostel. We needed cash since this was our first stop in Chile. We went to the grocery store ATM, but that was completely out of cash so we had to find another one in the pouring rain. Once we had cash we then returned to the grocery store, got some food for breakfast and dinner and went back to the hostel. Once we arrived we found out that it was a party hostel and tonight was beer pong night. We were not excited. The beds were cheap, the staff wasn’t attentive, it was loud but we made it work.
Jenny's additional comments: The hostel was horrible!! The wifi sucked, they gave someone a bed in our room at 3am, the music was loud all night, we woke up to someone banging on the front door of the hostel to be let in at 5am (like either give people keys or have staff 24/7), and then when we finally got up to cook our own breakfast since it wasn't included...someone stole our BACON. in the 12 hours it was in the refrigerator overnight. I was so sad.
