El Calafate, Argentina
We booked our bus tickets to the park through our hostel so the bus actually came by our hostel to pick us up in the morning. The breakfast was good with all the standard hostel items but also included some fresh cut banana, kiwi, and oranges. Once the first bus dropped us off we got to the bus terminal where we would take the full-size bus to the park. I tried to use my student ID because it’s a fraction of the full foreigner park entrance fee, but that rate was only for Argentinian students. Bummer.
Jenny and I walked around the boardwalks of the park and saw the massive glacier. It was 5km wide and up to 70m tall. The views were amazing but I think we were spoiled with Antarctica. We were a little bummed with the cost though...everything was expensive (bus tickets, entrance fees, food in the park, etc.) It was still a great day and the views were amazing, but it was definitely a budget buster for the day.
Once we got back from the park, it was about 5pm and our bus to El Chalten left at 6 PM. We booked it back to the hostel, pickd up our bags, and booked it back to the bus terminal (which was all uphill!) We got there in in time to make some sandwiches and chocolate milk before getting on the bus. This ride was only 3 hours long and we arrived just before 10pm.
Jenny booked us a hotel for the two nights using points which was a nice upgrade to have our own room and shower. I was starving so I walked down the block and ordered a milenesa complete. The restaurant had interesting art and music playing and when the sandwich came out, it was huge! Definitely enough for two meals. I took it back to the hotel and saved half of it for tomorrow’s hike. With a full belly, I took some medicine to ache my sore body and went to bed. Meanwhile, Jenny slept through all of that!
