Ushuaia, Argentina

Today we went into the Tierra Del Fuego National Park just outside the city in Ushuaia. We met some cool backpackers in the hostel last night and a group of us wanted to go into the park together and do a hike. The bus comes hourly and was 400 ARS($25 USD) round trip. Everything was expensive in Ushuaia but it seemed like the best way to get there and we had a big group going. The bus was super sketch, made some weird sounds and we even had to transfer buses because our first bus driver couldn’t drive into the park for some unknown reason. Once we got into the park we had to get a ticket to get in 210 ARS($13.60 USD) and then we were off.

The hike we decided to do was labeled as strenuous with an estimated time of 4 hours each way. The last bus left at 7pm and we arrived at 11am so we knew we had to move fast to make sure we caught the last bus. From where the bus left us to where we the trail started was a nice walk along one of the lakes in the park. After that beautiful walk, it was all uphill from there. The hike was tough, and some sections were so muddy that we were clinging onto the trees on the sides to try and avoid being ankle deep in mud.  Of course, I thought if I just went through the mud and was quick on my feet, I could do it. Big mistake. My foot was totally swamped in mud and it was up to my ankles. My grey shoe became a brown shoe.

Once we popped out of the forest section, we thought we might be getting close, but in reality we just reached the steepest portion to the top.  Jenny and I would take 10 steps and then take a break. It was super tough and all I could think about was the cheese sandwich that I could eat at the top. We finally reached the summit and it was breathtaking. 360 degree views of the park. It started to rain/snow and the wind was crazy at the top, but we were able to find a spot out of the wind to enjoy lunch.

The way down was much quicker and we ended up finished the hike in about 5 hours (3 up 2 down). We had a lot of fun and caught the bus back into town earlier than we expected so we could shop around and get some supplies that we needed.
