La Paloma to Cabo Polonia, Uruguay

The plan for the day was to head to the bus terminal and catch a bus to Cabo Polonio. Again, we were worried about the weather because the yesterday weather forecast said it was going to rain. Lucky for us, the weather app was never right and the new forecast was clear skies.

Cabo Polonio is an awesome little town with no running water or electricity unless they generate it themselves. That means lots of solar panels, little wind turbines and elevated water tanks. It also has no ATMs, (Nick had to literally run to multiple ATMs in La Paloma before we left) and is not accessible via roads....more on the dune buggies later.

to the Cabo Polonio National Park entrance. Once we got to the bus terminal, we had to catch a dune buggy ride to the town. The dune buggies are giant 4x4 that looked like a converted work truck that had bench seats in the back. Some of them even had space for people to sit on top for a sweet view. The ride in was bumpy but the views were amazing. Although it didn't seem like the safest means of transportation, we made it in one piece and the town was definitely worth the effort it took to get there.

Our hostel was right by the dune buggy drop off with many hammocks hanging out front. Everyone there was just enjoying the beach and the nice weather. Cabo Polonio was totally a hippy town, but we loved it! As the sun was setting, our hostel put out lanterns and started a fire where a few people were playing guitar and singing. We joined them for a bit, but were starving and needed to grab a quick dinner. We got a couple milanesa sandwiches from one of the restaurants and then decided to head to the beach. Because of the lack of power/light pollution, this made the views of the night sky absolutely beautiful! We lucked out with a clear sky, so we decided to experiment with our cameras (read: Nick took lots of pictures, Jenny gave up in about 5 minutes and just stared at the stars).

Cabo Polonio is a really cool town and we would definitely recommend it to anyone headed to Uruguay in the summer.
