La Paloma, Uruguay

Monday started off a bit more stressful than we wanted. Long story short: the owner of our hostel said the city bus would only take about 20 minutes to get to the central station; however, we were a little short on time and have never taken Uruguayan buses before, so we gave it about 10 minutes before we decided it was in our best interest to take a taxi. Unfortunately we had some trouble hailing a cab, so finally Jenny just called an uber. The uber ended up being cheaper and more effective than cabs because cabs charge for bags which is kind of annoying, but we made it to the bus station just in time! whew.

The 3 hour bus to La Paloma was very uneventful...especially for me. The trip seemed to only 15 minutes because I slept the whole time. We ended up choosing La Paloma because it was a smaller beach town that much more our style. The other beach;in the area is Punta del Este, but that's a lot more commercialized, busy, and expensive. We arrived to La Paloma and our hostel paid for the taxi from the bus terminal which was nice. The hostel was very beach-y. Lots of windows, open spaces and SAND. Literally sand everywhere.

Laundry was our next mission. So we got a little too comfortable in Buenos Aires and we were pretty much out of clean clothes and desperately needed to do laundry. I looked a bit goofy wearing long under armour pants and a polo at the beach. We walked around town and found a few laundromats and found one that said they had a washer and dryer. The price listed was 160 Pesos ($5.60) which didn’t sound too bad. Well we were wrong. The washer was super small so when we dumped out all our clothes on the table it ended up being 5 loads! It cost us $28 to do laundry! After we gave her all the clothes, she told us to come back at 9pm the next day to pick them up. Two lessons learned: 1. Handwash! 2. Uruguay is expensive.

It was supposed to rain all day but right around sunset, the weather started to clear up. The weather forecast tomorrow was also supposed to be rain so we decided to take advantage of the little sun we had and check out the beach. The water was a little cold, but on a hot day could feel nice. We walked down to the lighthouse and back. We were pretty exhausted at this point, so we cooked a quick dinner and started watching Designated Survivor. We ended up crashing at like 10, but our hostel seemed to have a party going on until 3am. yikes.
